About 360 Elephants Dead from Unknown Causes in Botswana – Insiderfolks, Over 360 elephants have been slaughtered in a number of unexplained events over Botswana in the last three months, local conservationists reported.
Some carcasses were discovered scattered near waterholes, whilst others seemed to have died “falling flat on their faces,” according to Niall McCann, Head of Conservation at United Kingdom National Park Rescue.
The live elephants seen near the death sites appeared to be physically weak. One elephant was seen wandering aimlessly in circles, unable to change directions.
Many species in the region did not seem to have been disturbed by anything that killed the elephants.
The Botswana government is testing samples of dead elephants but has not yet determined the cause of death.
“It’s awful — we need to know what the hell ‘s going on,” McCann said, adding that he couldn’t remember any time when so many elephants had died from a unexplained cause.
McCann said the smuggling could not be phased out this time, even if the tusks were already on the elephants.
“800 of them are lying there like a criminal trap,” he said.
There are a variety of theories about what may have caused the deaths, like elephant-specific parasites — or perhaps COVID-19, McCann said.
What I want to emphasize is that this has the potential to be a public health issue, “he said.
