Oxford University-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine costing Rs 225 per dose in India says Serum Institute
Oxford Covid-19 Vaccine will be priced at Rs 225 in India – Insiderfolks, The Serum Institute of India (SII) reported on Friday that it has entered into a new agreement with the international vaccine alliance Gavi and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to facilitate the manufacture and distribution of up to 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for India and other low-and middle-income countries (LMICs).
“The partnership would provide initial resources to SII to enable them expand production ability now, so that once the vaccine or vaccine has obtained regulatory clearance and WHO pre-qualification, doses can be manufactured on a scale for delivery to India and LMICs as part of the Gavi COVAX AMC process as early as the first half of 2021,” SII said in a statement.
The organization has set an reasonable price limit of $3 (around Rs 225) per dosage, she said. The vaccination would be eligible to 92 countries listed in Gavi’s COVAX AMC.
The funding would help the SII at-risk development of candidate vaccines from AstraZeneca and Novavavax, which would be eligible for procurement if they are effective in obtaining complete licensure and WHO pre-qualification, the statement stated.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through its Strategic Investment Fund, will provide at-risk financing of $150 million to Gavi, which will be used to assist the SII in the development of new vaccine candidates and the possible procurement of vaccines for low and middle-income countries through Gavi’s COVAX Advance Market Contribution (AMC), according to the announcement.
“In an attempt to improve and enhance our battle against COVID-19; SII has collaborated with Gavi and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to accelerate the manufacture and distribution of up to 100 million doses of potential COVID vaccines for India and low-and middle-income countries in 2021,” said Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla.
Through this partnership, SII aims to step up constant efforts to save the lives of millions of people from this terrible disease, he added. The Serum Institute has a long tradition of collaborations with Gavi and pharmaceutical firms to develop vaccinations that defend against meningitis, serious diarrhea, pneumonia and measles, according to the release.
“We are very pleased to see that SII has entered into this global partnership to respond to the global health challenge presented by COVID-19,” said Renu Swarup, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.
In a similar way, the Indian Council of Medical Research Director General Balram Bhargava said: “ICMR deeply supports our cutting-edge vaccine development and manufacturing capabilities, of which SII is a prominent illustration. This collaboration is yet another move in India ‘s efforts to intensify the battle against this global pandemic.”
According to the study by Reuters, AstraZeneca has been given immunity against allegations of drug liability linked to its COVID-19 vaccine candidate in the future by several of the countries in which it has concluded agreements.
