Kerala Launches Its First Water Taxi Service In The Backwaters Of Alappuzha – Insiderfolks, for ferry passengers.
Kerala State’s first water taxi service, introduced in the backwaters of Alappuzha, will carry passengers by ferry. Catamaran diesel-powered vessels, with a seating capacity of 10 people, is the first in a series of 4 boats to be launched by the State Water Transport Department.
The ‘river taxi’ will take up to 10 passengers at a time. One in the video is the first of four solar-powered water taxis to be launched by the State Water Transport Department (SWTD) in Kerala.
The government claims that the water taxi might help improve tourism, which, like every other city, has been struck by a pandemic.
Benny, the boat’s helmsman is pleased to be part of the state’s first water taxi team. “The boat has a power steering system and I am delighted to have been chosen for the service. I think the water taxi would certainly improve the tourism sector in the Kuttanad area,” he said.
Sandith Thandasherry, CEO of Navgathi Marine Design and Constructions Private Ltd., who designed the country’s first solar ferry, Aditya, said that the water taxi was able to operate at a top speed of 30 km per hour during the trial run.
“It’s interesting in two respects. One in terms of operation. Several state governments have announced the start of water taxis in the past, it’s now being started in Kerala. It’s a high-speed catamaran on the boat itself. All electrical equipment is powered by the sun. All auxiliary loads are powered by solar panels,” he said.
A few months back, India’s first solar ferry, Aditya, designed by Navgathi, a Kochi-based company, received the prestigious Gustave Trouve Award for Excellence in Electric Vessels and Vessels. The boats were manufactured by the same company that designed Aditya.
This means the every time you visit the backwaters, you’ll be able to hire a water taxi that will take you to any location you want to go!
