The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores said it turned the missed change into a cold, hard dollar.

The city aquarium confirmed in a Facebook statement Saturday that its employees had shut off the 30-foot-tall “Smoky Mountain” waterfall and gathered up all the tourists’ improvements.

At the moment, it was reported that about 100 gallons of coins had been washed and sorted.

The move “is going to the general treatment of the aquarium and the animals at this period,” wrote the aquarium.

The aquarium encouraged people to guess how much money there was in the waterfall — and received a lot of feedback in the comment section.

In another Facebook update on the project on Wednesday, the aquarium said it would “take longer than expected to sort, clean and count” almost 14 years of waterfall coins.

It was said that it will report the cumulative sum received next week.

The aquarium further noted that a part of the change had been submitted to an electronic coin counter at the local branch, noting that it took approximately four hours to collect nine boxes of the finds.

The aquarium, along with other state-owned North Carolina Aquarium facilities, has been partially inaccessible to the public since March 17 as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the North Carolina Aquariums website.

At the time, the aquariums confirmed that vital workers should “remain on-site to care for thousands of species in the aquarium” in their different locations.

Extra workers will operate on-site and at home to “ensure that the Aquarium is able to reopen and accept visitors back after this crucial crisis has subsided.”

North Carolina continues in “Safer at Home Step 2” after the period has been expanded to at least 11 September earlier this month.

In the end, the aquariums suggested that the sites could be reopened to the public at any time after that year, as the state transitions through Phase 3. Yet he stressed that “no deadline has yet been set.”
