Conservation organizations brought containers full of hundreds of tiny turtles to Gianyar Island Beach and urged local residents and volunteers to line up on the sand to release the hatchlings together.

The turtles, just a few inches long, swarmed with black sand and pebbles when the tide splashed over them.

“It’s so fun to see all these turtles released into the wild,” said American volunteer Jessica Lieberman, adding that she wished they would thrive.

Olive Ridley turtles are among the most common sea turtles, but are nevertheless deemed endangered since there are few locations where they can nest.

Normally, turtles will weigh between 34-50 kg (75-110 lb) as adults and rise to 60-70 cm (24-28 inches ) in length.

Flavianus Erwin Putranto, a conservation volunteer, said that turtle eggs have emerged in less areas in Bali than before, but initiatives to help preserve them have been successful.

“We are capable of gathering and storing them. Let’s say we can breed more turtles and send them back into the water, “he added.

Sea turtle numbers have reduced in recent years due to poaching, depletion of beach-nesting areas, over-harvesting of their eggs and fishing equipment.

The Bali authorities delivered 25 of the bigger green turtles to the sea on Wednesday after their capture last month during a crackdown on drug traffickers.

Agus Budi Santoso, head of the Bali Natural Resources and Conservation Center, recommended the creation of a “green zone” of designated turtle beaches to safely lay eggs away from hotels and constriction sites.
